Stephen A. Smith faced huge criticism after discussing relationships during a conversation with former NFL quarterback Cam Newton. Smith said he prefers women who are “domesticated” and said he wants a partner who can cook for him.

While explaining what he looks for in a relationship, Smith said he values “sex appeal, conversation and intellect” in a woman. He also claimed that society today is too critical of masculinity.

“Somebody needs to say that. We need to stop that s***. This assault against masculinity needs to end,” Smith said.

The longtime ESPN host explained that he can cook for himself but does not want to. “I want you to cook,” he said. Smith added, “I’ll pay for the food. I’ll take you out every week. The only thing I’m doing for myself is getting up for some cereal.”

He also joked about walking into a clean house and smelling Pine-Sol instead of food. Smith compared that situation to visits with his sister, saying she always cooks when he comes over.

“You the woman in my life, and I’m smelling Pine-Sol? That ain’t gonna last,” Smith said.

Smith, who has never married, also admitted that his lifestyle once made faithfulness difficult. He shares two daughters, Samantha and Nyla.

The comments spread across social media and started debate among viewers. Some users criticized Smith and called his expectations outdated. Others defended his right to have personal preferences in relationships.

One user wrote on X, “There goes his presidential aspirations.”

Another added, “This is why he’s not married and never has been.”

A different commenter pushed back on the criticism and argued that everyone has relationship preferences. “A preference is a preference,” the user wrote. “I don’t want a guy who sits and watches sports during his downtime.”

The controversy arrived only weeks after Smith created another awkward moment on ESPN’s First Take. During a segment with analyst Chiney Ogwumike, Smith reacted to her French accent while she discussed Rudy Gobert.

Smith told Ogwumike that hearing her speak French “turned me on,” which stunned co-host Shae Cornette on air. Ogwumike laughed off the comment, but clips from the exchange also got attention.
