The NFL surprised fans again on Monday, June 1. The month started strong with a shocking trade involving Myles Garrett. After a record-breaking 2025 season, which saw him set a new single-season sack record, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year found his way to Los Angeles.

The Rams sent Jared Verse, a first-round pick and more draft compensation to Cleveland, landing one of the best defensive players the league has ever seen.

At the end of March, after the team reworked Garrett’s contract, general manager Andrew Berry said the player would not leave the franchise.

“Myles is a career Brown,” Berry said. “He is one of the faces of our organization. I think we’ve been very clear both past and present in terms our feelings. I understand all the questions, but I’ll be honest: I don’t really want to waste a ton more breath on the topic.”

On Monday, in the wake of the trade, Todd Monken’s comments about Garrett’s future with the team turned heads. The front office never assured that the defensive end would stay with the franchise.

“No, I wasn’t assured that when I took the job,” Monken said. “I was never assured of anything when I took the job, other than once I signed my contract, whatever my contract said — that’s what I was assured. No matter what, any of us coaches sign up for is we show up every day and we coach the guys in the building like we’ve done since we’ve been here. That hasn’t changed.

“He’s not [unlike] any other player. I’m never told who’s going to be on the team, who’s not going to be on the team,” Monken added. “If that’s a question, I mean, every day we evaluate the roster — Andrew [Berry] evaluates the roster, management evaluates the roster. And, like I said, he’s no different than any other player we’ve got. So, I don’t know how to respond to that, because it’s really no different today than it’s been for the last however many months I’ve been the head coach.”

Myles Garrett, 30, leaves the Browns after nine seasons. He played 134 games, posting 412 tackles, 125.5 sacks, 23 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries for 16 yards.
