New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye sounded the alarms on Thursday, raising plenty of eyebrows during the practice session.
The team cut it short after the situation unfolded.
Maye, who will start his third season, comes from a terrific campaign that saw him lead the Patriots to Super Bowl 60. The team has renewed expectations for 2026, even more after they added veteran wide receiver AJ Brown to the roster.
However, everything could have been destroyed by an injury scare involving the quarterback.
Drake Maye Suffers Injury Scare During Thursday Practice

ESPN reporter Mike Reiss shared that coach Mike Vrabel stopped practice near the end of a competitive red-zone drill. Drake Maye collided with Bradyn Swinson after connecting with AJ Brown.
Mike Vrabel stopped practice near the end of a competitive red-zone drill after Drake Maye ended up on the ground with a defender, and huddled the entire team up on the field.
Can’t have it. Too risky.
And practice ended on that note, about 20 minutes early.
Maye seemed ok.

The entire team gathered around the quarterback while Swinson tried to explain himself.
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston said Maye “dodged a bullet” after the incident.
Practice was scheduled to go until about 2:50 but ended abruptly after Bradyn Swinson collided with Drake Maye after Maye completed a pass to AJ Brown.
Both players on the ground momentarily. Maye appears to be OK. Swinson seemed to try to explain himself in the aftermath.

Fortunately, nothing serious happened. The Patriots have a lot at stake this offseason, and losing Maye would be the worst possible news. Andrew Callahan said the offense and defense had a “hotly contested” red-zone practice, which could have ruined their entire aspirations.
