Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes found himself at the center of a debate this week after reacting to a controversial call during the FIFA World Cup.

Like many American sports fans, Mahomes watched the United States play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday night. The United States won the match, but striker Folarin Balogun received a red card in the 64th minute.

The referees reviewed the play using VAR before sending Balogun off for a tackle on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. The decision became a point of discussion among fans and soccer experts.

USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino strongly disagreed with the call after the match.

“For me, never is it a red card,” Pochettino said. “Never was there intention to step on the player. If the intention is to damage the opponent, OK, I understand. But that was a normal action in football that you are, you know, fighting for the ball and your feet land, no?”

Mahomes also shared his frustration on social media. He posted a short message that read, “Man what……”

Mahomes’ reaction made fans excited. While many people questioned the red card, some fans joked that the Chiefs star was the last person who should criticize officiating.

Several users pointed to the favorable calls Mahomes and the Chiefs have received during his NFL career.

“WHO is complaining about refs??” one fan replied.

“You’re the last person on this world to complain about refs,” another fan wrote.

One user added, “Isn’t it the chiefs job to pay the refs what happened?”

Another commenter posted, “Not the flop merchant questioning officiating.”

People actually thrashed Mahomes for posting about refs.

Meanwhile, the United States now must prepare for its next match without Balogun. FIFA confirmed that the striker will miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium due to the red card. However, soccer reporter Tom Bogert reported on Friday that FIFA decided not to extend Balogun’s suspension beyond that one match.

The USMNT now will look to players such as Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Malik Tillman to help fill the gap as the team tries to reach the quarterfinals.
