Jemele Hill Is Begging ESPN To Fire Her Amid Latest Layoffs

ESPN’s latest wave of layoffs pulled a familiar personality into the conversation, even though she hadn’t worked there in years.

Former ESPN personality Jemele Hill poked fun at the cuts by asking to be fired.

“I really hope ESPN lays me off. It’ll be tough but I’ll manage,” she wrote. “In fact, let me just submit my resignation to make it easier on them. No need to draw this out.”

It appears some users weren’t aware that Hill hadn’t been with ESPN for nearly a decade. 

“I don’t like everything that out of your mouth, but opposing voices are needed,” one wrote. “That’s something I will always defend. Good luck no matter how it plays out.”

Other users totally got it.

“God I love when you troll people Jemele. People not realizing that you haven’t been at ESPN for a decade now is my favorite 😂,” someone laughed.

“ESPN can y’all fire Jemele Hill again even though she doesn’t work for the company anymore it will make my day better,” said another.

Hill departed ESPN in 2018 after joining The Undefeated, leaving the company altogether later that year. She previously drew national headlines during her tenure, after ESPN suspended her for violating its social media policy due to political tweets.

ESPN Continues Another Round Of High-Profile Layoffs

Hill’s joke followed another significant round of layoffs at ESPN.

The latest cuts affected both on-air personalities and behind-the-scenes employees. The restructuring largely stemmed from ESPN’s integration of NFL Network assets following its acquisition earlier this year, although other departments also lost staff. 

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro described the decisions as difficult but necessary in a memo to employees.

Several recognizable names reportedly lost their jobs, including veteran baseball broadcaster Karl Ravech, NFL insider Tom Pelissero and analyst Ryan Clark. Reports also indicated that Cam Newton, Bart Scott, Stephania Bell and Charles Davis were among those affected.

Against that backdrop, Hill seized the opportunity to poke fun at her own history with ESPN.

Her sarcastic post landed with many followers who remembered she hadn’t worked for the network in years, while others briefly believed she had somehow remained on ESPN’s payroll all this time.
