Following the initial wave of public outrage, the lead architect behind the massive construction project dropped a significant bombshell.
Jonathan Mallie of Populous explained that the primary objective involved bringing spectators as close as possible to the action. This was to create an elevated atmosphere. However, achieving that level of proximity required certain trade-offs that affected visibility from various sections of the upper and lower decks.
“You will find some level of obstruction in every stadium in the world,” Jonathan Mallie, global director and managing director of Populous’ Americas practice, told the outlet.
“The goal was to bring everybody closer to the field and create an upper deck with an incredible proximity and presence within the bowl to help create a next-level experience for Bills Mafia,” he added.
Therefore, the design intentionally prioritized intimacy and energy within the seating bowl over completely unobstructed sightlines in every location.
In the meantime, the Buffalo Bills are trying to get much further than they did last year. The franchise last went to the Super Bowl in 1994. They actually played in four straight Super Bowls, losing them all.
