Colts Coach Left Screaming In Extreme Pain After Frightening Sideline Collision On Final Play Of Preseason Game vs. Patriots [VIDEO]

The Indianapolis Colts escaped Thursday night with a 13-13 preseason tie. Their final play, however, produced an ugly moment on the sideline.

Special teams coordinator Brian Mason appeared to get caught up in the action during the final play. Video shared by a Colts fan showed Mason getting wiped out by a player on the sideline.  

He remained down for several moments and appeared to be in significant pain. He eventually sat up, which should be a good sign.

The Colts are very dependent on Mason, who has built one of the NFL’s better special teams units in Indianapolis. The Colts’ official coaching bio notes that his 2025 unit ranked second in kickoff return average.

Indianapolis averaged 28.8 yards per kickoff return last season. Opponents averaged only 6.3 yards per punt return against the Colts.

The Colts also ranked second league-wide in field-goal percentage at 94.4 percent. They accomplished that despite using three kickers during the season.

Colts’ Special Teams Unit Entered The Night With Momentum

Mason has served as Indianapolis’ special teams coordinator since 2023. The Colts retained him on Shane Steichen’s 2026 coaching staff.

His group also had a notable role in the preseason opener. Spencer Shrader converted field goals from 46 and 61 yards during the second half.

Those kicks helped Indianapolis erase a 13-7 deficit. The Colts eventually tied the game at 13 when the final whistle arrived.

The result mattered little in the standings, but Thursday provided several useful evaluations. Anthony Richardson played the first half and delivered the strongest statistical performance of the night for Indianapolis.

Richardson completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards. He also rushed six times for 53 yards and scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

He did throw an interception and lost a fumble. However, his performance gave Indianapolis plenty to evaluate after a long stretch without meaningful game action.

Brian Mason’s Injury Adds An Unwanted Ending

The Patriots also had a productive night from Tommy DeVito. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.

New England took a 10-7 halftime lead before Borregales added a 52-yard field goal. Indianapolis answered with Shrader’s two late kicks.

Then came the strange ending involving Mason.

Preseason games are designed to test players, schemes and roster depth. Coaches usually expect to leave those nights with film to study, not an injury scare of their own.

For now, Mason’s status remains unclear. The video shows him in obvious discomfort, but no official diagnosis has been announced.

Indianapolis will host Atlanta on August 22 for its second preseason game. The Colts will presumably hope their special teams coordinator is back on the sideline by then.
