AJ Brown went up against his former team for the first time Wednesday as the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots opened joint practices at Gillette Stadium.

The Eagles skipped their projected starters in last week’s preseason opener against Baltimore. They are using these two practice sessions as a major tune-up for the regular season, giving the first-team unit plenty of reps.

Naturally, all eyes were on Brown. After being traded from Philadelphia to New England back in June, seeing the star wideout line up against his old teammates brought plenty of extra hype to the field.

Brown faced Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell on the first 1-on-1 rep. Brown tried to beat Mitchell deep on a go ball. Mitchell stayed tight in coverage, and the pass fell incomplete.

Fans reacted to this scene.

“I’ve seen AJ drop that ball a dozen times he’s in mid season form already,” one fan wrote.

Another fan said, “Aj trying to push off a little smh.”

“That’s the AJ I remember,” another fan commented.

Brown did not appear to make much effort to greet his former teammates as he jogged onto the field. The Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski shared videos that showed the moment.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel also praised Brown before the practice. Vrabel pointed to changes he has seen in Brown since their time together with the Tennessee Titans.

“Just the way that he communicates with coaches, the way he communicates with players, just I would say an overall maturity,” Vrabel said Wednesday. “He’s accountable, gets mistakes corrected. You can coach him hard… he wants to do well for the entire offense.”

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio also noted that Brown has attended all 18 Patriots practices during training camp.

Brown spent several productive seasons with Philadelphia and helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl after the 2024 season. However, he voiced frustration during the 2025 campaign and later told the team he wanted to play elsewhere.

Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman eventually traded Brown to New England.

Now Brown hopes to regain his Pro Bowl form with the Patriots. He also has a new quarterback in third-year passer Drake Maye.

The Eagles and Patriots will practice again on Thursday before they meet Saturday in a preseason game at Gillette Stadium.
