Cameras caught a moment this week that fans didn’t expect to see. Two former teammates, split apart by a trade just months ago, found themselves standing on the same field again.

The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots ran joint practices in Foxborough on Wednesday, bringing A.J. Brown back to Philadelphia’s roster for the first time since his June trade.

Reporters watched closely for any sign of tension between Brown and his former quarterback, Jalen Hurts, given how their relationship had cooled during Brown’s final season with the Eagles.

Early signs pointed toward distance. Brown jogged past several former teammates without stopping to greet them as he headed onto the field, a moment captured on video

Reporters also asked Hurts directly about advice for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye on getting the most out of Brown. Hurts kept his answer short, pivoting the conversation back to Maye’s own development rather than addressing Brown specifically.

Still, both players left the door open for warmer feelings. Brown told the Boston Globe, “I know I’m on the opposite team now, but it was love,” adding that he hadn’t spoken to Hurts since the trade but expected their paths to cross before the week was out.

Hurts echoed that sentiment to the same outlet. “I didn’t get to yet,” he said. “Got a lot of love for him, always have.”

The tone shifted considerably on Thursday. A video from Eagles reporter Brandon Lee Gowton shows Brown making his way to his former QB, hugging him before they shared a brief conversation.

Both players previously stopped short of digging into what actually drove Brown’s departure, a subject that’s produced plenty of speculation since the trade. That includes claims alleging locker room tension played a role in the move.

The Patriots sent Philadelphia a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to acquire Brown in June, reuniting him with head coach Mike Vrabel from their days together in Tennessee. The move left the Eagles leaning on DeVonta Smith as their top receiving option heading into the season, while Brown now works to build chemistry with Maye in New England.

Whatever tension lingers between Brown and his former team, Wednesday’s practice suggested it hasn’t erased the relationships he built during his three seasons in Philadelphia.

The Eagles and Patriots continue their joint work on Thursday before meeting in a preseason game Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
