The New Orleans Saints need additional help in the backfield, and now they might have found a solution, at least in the short term. 

The team traded former Pro Bowl linebacker Deion Jones to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for running back Zamir White. Both players were signed by the 49ers and Saints this offseason, which made this move a bit surprising.

White has carved himself a respectable career as a backup since he was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 45 games and started a total of nine games for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Deion Jones, on the other hand, is on a steep decline after the 2021 season. After a successful six-year run with the Atlanta Falcons, he has signed with five teams, with the 49ers being the sixth after this transaction.

The trade was announced by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday night.

Unsurprisingly, some were skeptical about the trade. Fans argued that the exchange between a couple of backups would not move the needle for either team next season.

“Trading players you just signed off waivers is some madden s*** lmao,” a fan said on X.

Another fan said, “Love it…neither player pictured is in his current teams uniform prior the trade haha.”

Why The Saints Made This Move

The team’s star running back, Alvin Kamara, is expected to be out due to a sprained MCL. That’s a huge blow for the Saints, who are hoping to have a much better showing next season compared to last year’s abysmal campaign.

Zamir White will have a chance to compete for a spot on opening night. He will not have an easy path, though. The team recently received some good news with Kendre Miller reportedly good to go after a back injury.

Plus, offseason additions such as Travis Etienne Jr., Ty Chandler, and CJ Donaldson are healthy and raring to go.
