Latest Update On Patrick Mahomes’ Injury & Week 1 Status Is Not What Fans Want To Hear

Patrick Mahomes knows what he wants. The Chiefs quarterback wants to play in Week 1. He also feels confident that his recovery from last season’s ACL tear will allow him to do just that.

Mahomes said he feels “extremely confident” about playing when the Chiefs open the season. He also said his recovery continues to move in the right direction.

“We’re trending (in) that direction. We’ll see if I get to play then. If not, I’m going to be ready to go for that first game of the year, God willing,” Mahomes said, according to Tod Palmer.

Mahomes has taken part in nearly everything during practice and training camp.

He said, “I feel great. I’m getting more and more athletic every single time I’m on the football field, and that’s all you can ask for.”

That progress has given him reason to stay optimistic.

Still, Chiefs fans do not have the clear answer they want.

Andy Reid Still Won’t Give A Week 1 Answer

While Mahomes sounds confident, head coach Andy Reid remains cautious. Reid does not want to predict whether his quarterback will start the season opener.

“He’s doing great,” Reid said. “We’ll just see. I’m literally taking it day by day. There are no predictions here on anything.”

Reid said the Chiefs will wait for the doctors and trainers to give Mahomes the green light. He also wants Mahomes to feel ready before the team makes a final decision.

“If the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can, then we’ll address that when we get there,” Reid said.

That leaves Chiefs fans waiting.

Mahomes continues to sound encouraged about his recovery. Reid, however, has made it clear that nothing is certain yet.

The Chiefs will open the season against the Broncos on Monday night, Sept. 14. Until then, fans may have to wait for the answer they really want, Mahomes is ready to go.
