Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear he still has Tony Romo’s back after CBS Sports let the former quarterback go.

CBS cut ties with Romo last Friday after weeks of speculation. The decision came down after Romo was arrested on July 23, when police cited him for unsafe passing on the right, driving while intoxicated, and having open alcohol in the car.

Romo put out a statement responding to the move. He said, “I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life–with a desire to win and be the best that I can be.” He also thanked his family, friends, NFL fans, and the football community for their support.

Romo first joined CBS back in 2017 and became one of the biggest voices covering the NFL, eventually landing a huge 10-year, $180 million contract extension. It looks like he and CBS most likely agreed on a settlement.

Jones has no plans to turn his back on Romo. The Cowboys owner spoke about Romo on 105.3 The Fan and called him one of his most valued personal relationships.

“Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis. I love him and I’m sorry that this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL and, frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy,” Jones said.

Jones also acknowledged that Romo has made mistakes. Still, he believes the former quarterback has plenty of opportunities ahead.

“Now, having said all of that, he’s just getting started. He really is,” Jones said. “He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone, period, that has a better future than Tony Romo.”

Jones also praised Romo as a person and pointed to his talent and character.

That support could matter as Romo considers his next move. NFL insider Mike Florio recently suggested that the Cowboys could explore a role for Romo within the organization.

The Cowboys have seen former players take on top roles outside the booth. The Atlanta Falcons hired Matt Ryan as their president of football operations, while the Miami Dolphins brought in Troy Aikman as a consultant.

Romo could follow a similar path. For now, his next step remains unclear. But Jones has made clear that he still believes Romo has a bright future ahead.
