When Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the playing of the National Anthem, it took a lot of courage for him to do that.

He knew doing that would make him public enemy number one among millions of people. What he did not expect was that his career would be over as a result.

Today, he works as a civil rights activist and an author, among other things. He also maintains a rigorous daily training routine to show NFL teams he stays ready for a call at any time.

Even when he is long gone, he already has a successor in place.

Former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick recently appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. It was initially supposed to be about him writing several children’s books since leaving the National Football League.

Kaepernick described writing children’s books as needing to “distill everything down to its simplest form,” and called writing a memoir a “much more elaborate process.”

The former QB also spent some time talking with Shepard about now having his own child, who is 4 years old. At first, he admits, he was in a bit of denial about the traits he had passed on to her. Now he cannot ignore it.

“When we first had our baby girl,” he told Shepard, “I almost got defensive when people were like, ‘Oh, she looks like you,’ or, ‘She’s doing this like you.’ I’m like, ‘She’s her own person’… But now there are things she does that I’m like, that’s pretty on the nose.”

“That is Nessa’s favorite part,” he said of his daughter’s similarities to him. “She’s like, ‘You have to deal with you now.’”

Of those shared traits, Colin Kaepernick said, “She is willing to challenge and is also OK with the consequences on the other side of it. And I’m like, this is fascinating to watch.”

When she pushes back, her dad says, “It’s beautiful because she has no fear.”

The former quarterback feels grateful that his daughter inherited his strong personality traits and knows she must stand up for herself boldly in the future, just as he did.

“She’s gonna be a little, light-skinned Black girl, and she’s gonna have Kaepernick as her last name,” he said. “I know she’s gonna have to face things she ain’t asked for, so I’m like, you have to be prepared.”

If she’s anything like her father, she’ll be more than ready to face the world.
