The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have some tough choices to make before the NFL trade deadline hits. They just blew out the Carolina Panthers 42-13 in Week 7, moving to 2-5 and giving their playoff hopes a little life. But their next two games will likely decide what they do next.

Tampa Bay takes on the Falcons in Week 8 and then plays the Bears on November 8. The trade deadline lands just two days after that Chicago game, so if the Bucs lose both, they could easily turn into sellers. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks wide receiver Chris Godwin might end up on the trade block, and the Kansas City Chiefs could be one of the teams trying to land him.

Godwin has spent his entire career in Tampa Bay and made a Pro Bowl with the team. Even so, his dip in production and heavy contract might force the Bucs to listen to offers.

Fowler discussed Godwin’s trade potential in his October 28 report on ESPN, which ranked the top candidates available before the deadline.

“Godwin is a legacy Buc through 10 seasons, but he hasn’t been quite the same since his 2024 ankle injury,” Fowler wrote. “His veteran presence and savvy play could help another team. He’s due $22 million in cash this year, which could be a deterrent to a deal, though.”

Godwin signed a three-year, $66 million contract before the 2025 season. The deal came after a serious injury ended his 2024 campaign. Since then, he has recorded 56 catches for 576 yards and two touchdowns across 15 games.

His numbers have dropped further in 2026. Godwin has caught 27 passes for 243 yards and no touchdowns this season. Those figures fall well short of the production Tampa Bay once expected from the veteran receiver.

Godwin had a good reputation in the league before suffering a major leg injury against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7 of the 2024 season. He has struggled to regain his earlier form since then.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon put Godwin at the top of his list of the NFL’s worst contracts heading into the 2026 season. Gagnon called out the receiver’s missed time, his drop in production, and how much money he’s making.

Godwin’s deal has $44 million in guaranteed money. His $33.7 million cap hit for 2026 is also the highest of any wide receiver in the league, according to Gagnon. Because of that, moving on from him would leave Tampa Bay with a massive financial hit.

The Patriots reportedly offered Godwin more than $90 million before the 2025 season, but he decided to stick with Tampa Bay.

A move to Kansas City could give Godwin another opportunity to contribute to a contender. That said, his big salary and recent stats could make trade talks tricky. How the Bucs play over their next two games will probably decide if they even pick up the phone.
