Could Joe Buck survive a single hit in the NFL? Troy Aikman doesn’t just think it’s impossible. He thinks his broadcast partner would leave the field on a stretcher.

Aikman shared his honest opinion during an appearance on the New Heights podcast back in April. Kelce brought up Buck’s extensive football knowledge and asked, “With a guy with as much football knowledge accumulated as Joe Buck, could Joe Buck get a yard in the NFL?” Aikman immediately shut down the possibility.

“There is no chance. None. None,” Aikman told Kelce. He then added, “Joe would not only not get a yard, he might not get up. I mean, come on. Are you serious?”

Kelce immediately broke out laughing, realizing that he had put Buck in an uncomfortable position with the question. “My bad, Joe. I set Joe up for failure right there,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end joked.

Aikman’s comments from earlier this year have reemerged amid growing tension between the longtime broadcast partners. The two spent nearly two decades together at Fox before joining ESPN in 2022 to call Monday Night Football.

Their professional relationship is now in question as both broadcasters approach the end of their original ESPN contracts. Buck recently signed a six-year, $108 million extension that will keep him at ESPN through 2030. However, Aikman has yet to reach a new agreement with the network.

Buck and Aikman had a heated argument inside the broadcast booth before the Bills-Rams Monday night game a few weeks ago. A new report from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand also detailed their exchange.

Buck reportedly opened the confrontation by asking, “You are not going to f—— talk to me?” Aikman then expressed his frustration over Buck’s new deal, saying, “I just never thought you’d do it to me.”

Buck responded, “I’m not the reason you don’t have a contract.” He also blamed Aikman’s treatment of ESPN staffers for the network’s decision to move on from several producers and directors.

ESPN has reportedly put contract talks with Aikman on hold after turning down his asking price, which would have put his pay right near Buck’s new deal.

Meanwhile, the network already seems to have a backup plan. According to The Athletic, Fox analyst Greg Olsen is the frontrunner to team up with Buck if Aikman ends up walking away.

Olsen’s contract with Fox runs out after this season, so jumping over to ESPN would give him another shot at calling games as the lead voice in a top NFL broadcast booth.
