Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell spent Sunday night in a local hospital after sustaining a scary neck injury.

Campbell went down on the first play of the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings. He appeared to run headfirst into T.J. Hockenson’s hip on a 10-yard catch, then lay face down without moving.

Medical staff placed him on a backboard to get him off the field. Reports indicated that he was breathing and alert.

Head coach Dan Campbell has since offered an encouraging update. He called the news “positive” on Monday, per Fox 2 Detroit. The outlet also relayed the team’s statement: “Preliminary indications are positive.”

TMZ reported that the coach fought back emotion and asked for more prayers. The outlet also noted that neither Dan Campbell nor the team said whether Jack has feeling or mobility.

“It was good. It was positive, you know? Got to see his parents, talk to his wife, and you know, everybody’s in good spirits,” the head coach added on Monday.

There was concern for Jack from both sidelines. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell opened his postgame press conference by sending thoughts and prayers. Hockenson, the player Campbell tackled, said “we’re competitors but at the end of the day we’re on the same team,” per TMZ.

Aidan Hutchinson said “it was for 4-6, man,” after the game, per the Free Press. Campbell wears No. 46.

Campbell, 26, was the No. 18 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Iowa. He earned All-Pro honors last season and finished second in the league with 176 tackles.

The Lions named him a captain for the first time this year. He also signed a four-year extension in May that runs through the 2030 season, according to NFL.com.

Detroit rallied to win 19-15, with Jameson Williams scoring the go-ahead touchdown after the injury. The Lions improved to 5-2 and will visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
