The Indianapolis Colts might have another suitor in the mix for Jonathan Taylor as the NFL trade deadline gets closer. ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently hinted that an unnamed “mystery team” reached out to Indianapolis to check in on the All-Pro running back.

Sitting at 2-6, the Colts look ready to listen to trade calls for some of their star players. Taylor is easily one of the biggest names on the market, with several playoff contenders eager to add a good runner. The 27-year-old has racked up 8,208 rushing yards and 77 touchdowns since entering the league with Indy in 2020.

Teams like the Broncos, Giants, Seahawks, and Vikings have all been linked to him. But with Schefter’s latest report, it sounds like another surprise contender could jump into the bidding before time runs out.

Schefter discussed the growing interest in Taylor during an appearance Friday. He revealed that he had heard some unexpected team names while speaking with people around the league.

“Like last time I’m on the phone with some people, I’m hearing some names that I’ve never heard before. Never heard. I had a team text you this morning about Jonathan Taylor,” Schefter said. “I’m like, this team on Jonathan? Like really? Wow. So that’s the point. That’s the great and exciting part of the deadline.”

Schefter did not identify the team. However, another recent report has raised questions about the San Francisco 49ers.

Chris Simms recently discussed the possibility of San Francisco pursuing Taylor. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, “People around the league ask Simms those questions, because 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is one of his best friends — and because they assume Simms knows what’s happening with the 49ers, even if he rarely if ever does.”

Florio also compared the potential deal to San Francisco’s 2022 trade for Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers stunned the league when they acquired McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers during the season.

A Taylor trade would create another interesting situation in San Francisco. He could potentially join McCaffrey in the same backfield and give head coach Kyle Shanahan another major offensive weapon.

However, nobody has confirmed the 49ers’ interest, and the report does not establish that the team Schefter mentioned was San Francisco.

The Colts and 49ers also have a recent trade history. San Francisco acquired defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from Indianapolis in 2020.

With the deadline approaching, Taylor’s future remains an interesting storyline.
