The New Orleans Saints have still not made a decision about experienced running back Alvin Kamara. More than a month ago, head coach Kellen Moore said the team was “getting close” to making a decision. With training camp starting on July 29, people are still wondering what will happen next.

Kamara is set to earn $11.5 million this season and carries a salary cap hit of $10.4 million. He is one of the most popular players in Saints history, but his numbers dropped last season. He finished with 471 rushing yards, leading to more questions about his future with the team.

Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com believes the Saints should move on from Kamara, especially after adding Travis Etienne to the roster. Duncan argued that the team could hand the starting job to Etienne while giving more opportunities to younger running backs Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estime.

“With Kamara out of the picture, the Saints could hand the backfield keys to Travis Etienne and give more snaps to their stable of young reserve backs, Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estimé. It might not be the ending either side envisioned two years ago when Kamara signed a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension. But there are certainly worse ways for a relationship to end,” Duncan wrote. He also pointed to comments from Saints linebacker Demario Davis, who said earlier this year that “the good times only roll for so long, and sometimes it’s best to move on.”

Duncan also reported that some within the organization viewed Kamara’s surprise appearance at organized team activities as a publicity stunt. That claim quickly drew attention as speculation about the running back’s future continued.

Less than a day after Duncan published his story, Kamara shared a message on social media that helped the discussion.

“All that salt only killin a snail…,” Kamara wrote on X.

Kamara did not mention Duncan or the Saints directly. Still, the timing of the post led many fans to wonder if he responded to the growing reports about his future.

The Saints now face a major decision before players report for training camp. Kamara has spent his entire NFL career in New Orleans since the team drafted him in 2017. During that time, he has totaled 7,250 rushing yards, 4,948 receiving yards, and 86 touchdowns.

Those numbers have made Kamara one of the franchise’s most productive players. Even so, the Saints must decide whether to keep a franchise legend or move forward with a younger backfield before camp begins on July 29.
