Amid another smooth regular season, the Buffalo Bills continue to make changes to improve their quality. The AFC West leaders made a shocking decision ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

Joe Brady’s first year as the team’s head coach has paid off. The offense continues to work seamlessly, while the defense isn’t necessarily dominant, but can still win games. They rank 11th in completion percentage allowed (63.1) and 15th in yards allowed per pass attempt (7.0).

The secondary will look different against the Vikings after the team released a star safety.

Inconsistency In Play Drove Bills Release Decision

The Bills cut C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday. The veteran safety, with stops against the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears, served a one-game suspension after spitting in Brock Bowers’ direction in Week 6.

Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com reported that the decision was based on Gardner-Johnson’s on-field performance, not the incident.

“This was a football decision, I’ve learned,” Parrino said. “Gardner-Johnson was inconsistent on the field and he doesn’t play special teams. Other players stepped up & the Bills couldn’t find a spot for CJGJ back on the roster.

This decision could open the door for a trade. Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone are still on the roster, but a move for another experienced safety could be coming soon.
