Justin Herbert finds himself at the center of unexpected trade talk once again. The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback has struggled through the early weeks of the 2026 season, and that performance has sparked fresh speculation.

FS1 host Nick Wright recently floated a blockbuster scenario that would send Herbert to the AFC East division. Wright pointed to strong draft capital as a big reason to lure the Chargers and suggested that Los Angeles might listen if the losses keep piling up.

Early Season Numbers Fuel The Speculation

Herbert has completed just 59.1 percent of his passes for 627 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions through three games. Those marks sit well below his career standards, and the Chargers have looked disjointed on offense.

Wright laid out the potential haul the New York Jets could offer.

“It’s absolutely on the board that the Jets have three Top 12 picks – their own first-round pick, the Colts’ first-round pick from the Sauce Gardner trade, and they get to pick Dallas’s first or Green Bay’s first, which Green Bay owes Dallas for Micah. Do I expect at least two of those three teams to be really bad? Yes. If this Chargers’ year goes terrible, if the Jets call up the Chargers and say, ‘We will give you, not future picks, three picks you can use right now.’”

The idea centers on immediate assets rather than future selections. Wright noted that such a package would not cripple the Jets’ long-term ability to build around Herbert.

The Chargers recently provided clarity on Justin Herbert trade rumors and confirmed they have no plans to move their franchise quarterback anytime soon.

Herbert carries a no-trade clause that would further complicate any potential deal. Team sources have emphasized stability at the position even as the offense continues to search for rhythm under the current staff.

Still, the early interceptions and low completion rate have invited outside noise. One viral moment even saw Tom Brady cook Justin Herbert on an interception, drawing extra attention. Those plays have added fuel to the broader conversation about the quarterback’s current form.

Wright’s pitch remains purely hypothetical at this stage. No reports indicate the Chargers have shopped Herbert or that the Jets have made any formal inquiry. The analyst simply outlined a scenario in which a desperate Los Angeles front office might consider a massive return of draft capital.

The Jets sit in a position to acquire elite talent without surrendering future first-rounders. Meanwhile, the Chargers must decide whether continued struggles would force a fundamental reset. Herbert remains under contract through 2029, and the organization has shown no public willingness to explore a move.
