The Dallas Cowboys are bringing back old friend Will Grier to round up their quarterback room ahead of free agency.

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Cowboys have signed former Carolina Panthers 2019 third-round pick Will Grier. He’s now the third quarterback on the roster, behind starter Dak Prescott and backup Joe Milton III.

Grier was added to the Cowboys’ practice squad in the middle of the 2024 season. They released him in August, only to re-sign Grier back to their practice squad. However, he has yet to play a single snap with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 7-9-1 season, missing the postseason for the second straight year. The club fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and replaced him with Philadelphia Eagles assistant Christian Parker.

Will Grier made two starts as a rookie in 2019. He threw for 228 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions, per Pro Football Reference. Despite bouncing around the NFL, Grier hasn’t played a regular-season snap since his rookie year.

Re-signing Will Grier Is Just The Start Of The Cowboys’ Busy 2026 Offseason

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has already stressed a desire to retain pending free agents George Pickens and Javonte Williams. Both had career years in their first season with Dallas.

With Pickens and Williams pending free agents, and with Dallas owning two first-round picks this year, a busy offseason lies ahead for Jerry Jones and company. This club hasn’t missed the playoffs in three consecutive years since 2010-2013, more than a decade ago.

Dallas has the draft capital to quickly rebuild this defense into a contender. The offense won’t need any drastic changes if they can retain Pickens and Williams, who proved to be excellent fits in the Dak Prescott-led offense.

The bottom line is that this is a pivotal offseason for Jerry Jones, who’s made more bad moves than good over the last three years.
