As expected, the Cleveland Browns were thoroughly outworked by the Jacksonville Jaguars in opening week. While Browns starting QB Deshaun Watson had a respectable game, his struggles were still evident.

He threw an interception early in the first quarter. Even though he finished with 16-of-22 for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception, something was still missing from his performance.

Maybe his offseason troubles are still bothering him. Truth be told, many Browns fans are clamoring for Shedeur Sanders to start ahead of Watson. And after Week 1, the calls have grown louder.

After the Browns lost to the Jaguars, 34-10, Watson spoke to the reporters to address the fans.

“Yeah, I mean just keep moving forward, keep stepping forward, keep smiling, regardless of who’s against me or who’s with me,” Deshaun Watson said.

“I think that’s more beneficial for the team in that locker room. I’ve had a lot of support in that locker room after the game telling me to keep my head up, keep pushing forward, keep working. They’re behind me, so that’s always positive to see and hear. Yeah, we just got to keep going.”

“The adversity is going to be there. You’ve got to embrace it. That’s the only way — I thought it was going to be gone two years ago, but I guess not. So you just embrace it and keep pushing through until you break that wall through,” he concluded.

Truth be told, despite his lengthy explanation, many Browns fans aren’t convinced that he’s the long-term solution at QB. But good for him for staying positive despite the negativity.

Sure enough, Browns fans won’t ‘keep smiling’ if the losses start to pile up.

Due to Watson’s injury in 2025, Sanders started the last seven games for the Browns. While he wasn’t great, fans of the franchise saw value and potential for the young QB.

That’s why many Browns fans want Sanders to start over Watson. For a team that’s not expected to contend for a Super Bowl, what could go wrong? However, Cleveland has laid out a plan for Sanders in the 2026 season.

He will be Watson’s backup QB until further notice. For now, Deshaun Watson can keep his starting job. His future with the team, though, remains uncertain.
