Deshaun Watson’s tenure with the Cleveland Browns hasn’t been as positive as everybody expected when the AFC North team sent a plethora of picks to the Houston Texans to land the veteran quarterback.

It’s been four years since the blockbuster trade that allowed the Texans to rebuild their roster and become a strong team in the AFC, while the Browns will have to wait before they can recover from adding Watson. Even the owner blames the quarterback for their current struggles.

While he hopes to compete for the chance to start in 2026, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot doesn’t see Watson beating Shedeur Sanders for the QB1 role.

New head coach Todd Monken has a lot of work to do to revive the Browns’ offense. Picking the right quarterback would prove crucial again, and it doesn’t seem that Watson has the upper hand in the race. According to Cabot, multiple factors could give the win to Sanders.

“Right now, I would put it at 60% because if it comes down to Deshaun vs. Shedeur, there’s going to be a lot of sentiment to go with the player you finished last season with and showed what Todd Monken described as elite playmaking ability,” Cabot said on 92.3 The Fan. “In the event you throw him out there and it doesn’t go the way that you hoped, then you can turn it over to Deshaun.

“There are extenuating circumstances. With the way fans feel about Shedeur and fans feel about Deshaun, it might more sense to see what Shedeur can do and then, once again, if it doesn’t go the way you hoped, people would then be primed and ready for the Deshaun experience. They might not want that at the beginning of the season and that could be a distraction.”

The Browns’ current situation is complex. It looks like their best shot at being consistent is that Sanders develops into a reliable starter.
