Early injuries and a challenging start have defined JJ McCarthy’s NFL career. Selected 10th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, he missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus.
He took over starting duties in 2025 but missed additional time due to an ankle sprain. Ultimately, he finished his debut on-field year with 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Throughout the year, he struggled with consistency and turnovers in a limited sample size.
McCarthy had a stellar three-year college career at the University of Michigan, finishing with an astonishing 27–1 record as a starter. He also led the Wolverines to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship.
However, there are still major questions about him.

The viral footage demonstrates the young quarterback struggling heavily to find a rhythm during a series of routine passing drills. Subsequently, the highly scrutinized rookie JJ McCarthy launched several erratic passes that completely missed his intended targets on the field.
This visible lack of downfield accuracy immediately generated widespread groans from the passionate spectators watching closely from the stadium bleachers. Additionally, several critical remarks about his current readiness for professional game action were clearly audible throughout the short recording.
McCarthy Has a Lot To Prove
The Minnesota Vikings chose McCarthy over Sam Darnold primarily due to long-term salary cap flexibility and McCarthy’s status as a first-round franchise centerpiece.
That turned out to be a terrible decision.
Despite Darnold leading the Vikings to a stellar 14-3 record in 2024, the front office prioritized building around a quarterback on a cheap rookie contract. Even Sam Darnold admitted he “totally understood” the team’s decision.
After walking in free agency, Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks. He enjoyed immediate massive success, ultimately leading them to a Super Bowl LX victory in February 2026. That came despite losing money playing in San Francisco.
