Former NFL running back Le’Veon Bell remains behind bars after being arrested in Ohio over the weekend.
Bell was taken into custody after appearing at an autograph signing at Belden Village Mall in Jackson Township, near Canton. Authorities booked the former Pittsburgh Steelers star into the Stark County Jail on a Michigan warrant related to unpaid child support.
According to TMZ Sports, Bell allegedly owes more than $50,000 in child support. His attorney, Thomas Shaffer, said the payments were originally calculated using Bell’s former NFL earnings, even though he has not earned that salary in years.
“We’re told Le’Veon intends on explaining his predicament to the judge,” TMZ notes, “but the judge will also be well aware that just last year, Le’Veon was ordered to pay $25 million as a default judgment after failing to appear in court for a 2024 sexual abuse case.”
Local reporter Jordan Miller also reported that Bell remained in the Stark County Jail as of Monday morning.

Attorney Says Le’Veon Bell Is Struggling Financially
Shaffer told TMZ that Bell recently used his entire $50,000 NFL pension to make a child support payment. He added that Bell plans to explain his financial situation to a judge, arguing the current support obligations no longer reflect his actual income.
The 34-year-old played for the Steelers, Jets, Chiefs, Ravens and Buccaneers during an NFL career that spanned from 2013 to 2021. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro honors during his NFL career. He finished with 9,843 yards from scrimmage and 51 total touchdowns in 96 games.
The latest legal issue comes more than a year after Bell was ordered to pay $25 million in a civil case. This one involves sexual abuse allegations brought by his cousin.
Bell has denied the allegations and maintains he was never properly served with the lawsuit. His attorney is seeking to overturn the default judgment.
