Kansas City Chiefs Add 3-Time Super Bowl Champion Wide Receiver In Big Move

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to return to action in Week 6. The AFC West powerhouse remains undefeated and is preparing to face the winless Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Amid a strong start to the season, Andy Reid’s team is dealing with multiple injuries. The wide receiver room has suffered the most through the first four games. To help fill the void, they are bringing back a familiar wide receiver.
Chiefs Reunite With Justin Watson After Bye Week

Ian Rapoport reported that Justin Watson is joining the practice squad. Watson previously played for the team from 2022 to 2024.
He is a three-time Super Bowl champion. Watson won one title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and two more with the Chiefs. The move comes as Kansas City deals with uncertainty in its receiving room.
Andy Reid confirmed the signing during a Monday media availability. The team is also placing wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve with a dislocated ankle. Linebacker Cam Jones is being elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.
Watson spent three seasons in Kansas City before signing with the Houston Texans in 2025. He appeared in limited action for Houston due to injury and was later released. Across 50 games with the Chiefs, he recorded 64 receptions for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns.
Reid noted Watson’s familiarity with the system. He can contribute with only a short review if needed. At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Watson offers size and experience as a complementary receiver and special teams option.
Signing Provides Depth Amid Receiver Injuries

Thornton’s injury removed a downfield threat from the active roster. Rashee Rice has dealt with his own health questions, and other depth options have not produced consistently. Watson’s return gives the team a known commodity who has chemistry with Patrick Mahomes from his earlier stint.
The Chiefs had shown interest in Watson before the official signing. He was among several free agents the team considered. Adding him to the practice squad allows flexibility for potential elevations. The move does not close the door on further roster changes, but it addresses immediate needs as Kansas City prepares for upcoming games.
The team has made similar midseason additions for depth in the past. Further updates on his status will come as practices resume ahead of the Chargers matchup.
