Tom Brady is taking heat for one comment he made about Sam Darnold on Sunday.

Brady and Kevin Burkhardt remain Fox’s lead broadcast team this season. They worked Sunday’s 49ers-Seahawks game in Seattle.

Eddy Piñeiro broke a 29-29 tie with a field goal and 1:56 left, giving San Francisco a 32-29 win and a 5-0 record. Seattle fell to 3-2. Sam Darnold finished 18-of-29 for 195 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Brady’s remarks about Darnold became the talking point afterward.

The play came in the second quarter, with San Francisco leading 14-10. Darnold scrambled for five yards and stepped out of bounds.

Dre Greenlaw then hit him, which drew a 15-yard penalty. Seahawks players confronted Greenlaw near their bench. The sequence ended with Greenlaw’s ejection for a headbutt on Ernest Jones IV, who had no helmet on.

FOX showed a replay, and Brady appeared to defend the hit, suggesting Darnold exaggerated the contact. He also criticized a Darnold throw to Rashid Shaheed.

“I don’t think that’s an illegal hit at all,” Brady said. “I know they might call a penalty, but Dre Greenlaw’s on a full sprint to make sure Darnold’s not gaining anywhere close to the first down mark, which is exactly what Darnold’s doing. And then it’s a little nudge out of bounds and Darnold with the acting.”

Analyst Warren Sharp posted the clip on X along with a blunt caption.

“Tom Brady hates Sam Darnold … noted.”

“If that happened to Brady he would have been b**ching and crying about it for days,” one fan wrote.

A second user questioned Brady’s place in the booth.

“Brady don’t belong here. What a ridiculous call this was,” they said.

Not everyone agreed.

“I love Brady he calls it how he sees it. He was definitely acting there,” someone said.

“He hates the soft calls of the modern era. Darnold got bumped and ended up 8 yards out of bounds after doing a somersault and crashing into the bench. He was clearly looking for a flag,” another.

A 2025 report gives this some background. According to The Athletic, Brady did not want the Raiders to invest in Darnold in 2025.

Las Vegas would trade for Geno Smith instead. Darnold ended up signing a three-year, $100.5 million contract with Seattle.

Brady has fielded scrutiny of his worth in the booth before. Back in September, he called broadcast criticism clickbait and said he focuses on preparation.

Meanwhile, Greenlaw’s status for San Francisco’s Week 6 game against Washington remains undetermined, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.
