Male cheerleaders in the NFL have transitioned from a rarity to an accepted norm. While women have historically dominated the sidelines for decades, men are increasingly breaking into these squads.

Originally, cheerleading in the early 20th century was an entirely male activity focused on leading crowd chants. However, as the sport evolved, women became the primary faces of cheer squads.

For decades, professional football teams featured exclusively female dance teams. Consequently, when the Los Angeles Rams hired two male dancers, it marked a historic shift as they became the first official male cheerleaders in the modern NFL era.

The NFL preseason has wrapped up; however, one clip from the final game has upset social media. A high-energy routine by a male Patriots cheerleader completely stole the spotlight during the pregame festivities.

Consequently, the brief video clip quickly sparked a massive wave of public criticism and praise among online onlookers.

The inclusion of male cheerleaders on the Patriots marks a progressive evolution for the franchise. While the team featured all-female squads for roughly 35 years, it has since shifted its paradigm to embrace diverse, elite dancers.

Not everybody was happy about it.
