There are 32 teams currently playing in the NFL. All are within the U.S. While expansion talks have been ongoing for some time, commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to decide where it will take place.

So far, the league is gaining popularity outside of North America. Regular-season games have been played at London, Munich, Madrid, Paris, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and, most recently, Melbourne.

Roger Goodell Gets Honest About Canada’s Prospects For Expansion

If the NFL were to truly expand outside U.S. soil, would Canada become an option? It seems the most logical choice. Cities like Toronto and Vancouver already have large followings for the league. Plus, traveling won’t be much of an issue.

Furthermore, a survey has provided the numbers of the popularity of the NFL’s grandest stage, the Super Bowl. Over 75% of fans in Quebec and 66% of fans in Ontario favor the Super Bowl over the CFL’s Grey Cup.

During Goodell’s appearance in Fanduel’s Overdrive, he was honest about the prospect of Canada hosting an expansion team.

“We’re all huge fans of Toronto…I think the big thing is the stadium. The stadium is an important element of any team, ultimately. I think that is gonna be the key,” Roger Goodell said. 

When asked if the NFL will play more preseason games in Canada, he replied, “Yeah, I could see we’ll continue playing preseason games up there.”

One Non-USA City Gaining Ground For Expansion

While Toronto or Vancouver are inarguably the safest choice due to the NFL’s popularity in those cities, one particular non-USA city has been pegged as the most likely place to receive an expansion team.

According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, London has strong support within the NFL. He even said that the city is “overwhelming favorite among league executives.” 

An AFC executive added that London has a growing NFL infrastructure and traveling there isn’t as much of a hassle as it used to be. Roger Goodell may like the idea of that very much.
