New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo is caught right in the middle of a heated debate over NFL officiating after refs flagged him for a violent run against the Houston Texans. The second-year back was hit with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty early in the first quarter for lowering his helmet into a defender.

The call left fans and the team furious, especially after the league handed down its punishments for Week 7. The NFL hit Skattebo with a $7,073 fine, but seven other players were also fined for similar helmet hits without ever drawing a single flag during their games.

Skattebo, meanwhile, has no plans to change his aggressive running style. He made that clear while speaking to reporters after the game.

“I’ll keep that conversation between us, but I will say, the NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me,” Skattebo said. “I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. And if I’m going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I’m going to play for free.”

The Giants running back also made it clear that he wants to give everything he has for the team, regardless of the league’s punishment.

According to NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, eight players committed helmet-related infractions during Week 7. However, Skattebo was the only player who received an in-game penalty.

The other seven players received fines. Bears cornerback Clark Phillips received an $11,550 fine, while Broncos safety Brandon Jones paid $23,882. Denver linebacker Alex Singleton received a $47,662 fine.

Lions safety Brian Branch also received a $23,882 fine. Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt faced a $7,791 fine, while Steelers receiver Brandon Smith received a $4,916 fine. 49ers running back Jordan James received a $6,194 fine.

The difference in treatment did not sit well with some fans also. Still, the calls do not necessarily prove that officials target Skattebo. His aggressive running style has earned attention, and officials may watch his physical approach more closely.

Skattebo has no intention of backing down.
