Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban stepped in to help Terrion Arnold secure a bond following his arrest last week

Saban penned a rare character reference letter for Arnold, defending the former Crimson Tide cornerback as “exceptional” off the field.

The letter was submitted to a Florida judge during Arnold’s bond hearing, where he was granted $1 million bail after facing felony robbery and kidnapping charges in Tampa.

While Arnold would have been relieved following his release after several days in jail, the Lions have also released him. The team cut the CB loose hours after he was bonded.

As for Saban, he introduced himself as a coach who has worked with young men from “diverse and often difficult backgrounds.” He said he had known Arnold since 2021 and had consistently seen him treat people with respect, humility, and kindness.

Saban recalled welcoming his former player into his home, stressing he never once questioned Arnold’s conduct or integrity. He described Arnold’s character in glowing terms, noting that he stood out not only for his athletic ability but for his genuine care for others.

The coach admitted he wasn’t familiar with the details of the charges but asked the court to consider his personal experience with Arnold’s character. His letter was one of 11 submitted on the CB’s behalf.

“Based on my experiences with Terrion, I remain committed to supporting him,” Saban wrote. “While I’m not overly familiar with or educated on the charges he is facing, and understand the seriousness of his situation before the court, I would respectfully ask the Court to take into account my experience with Terrion, his character, history and the positive impact he had on our program.”

Prosecutors had asked that Arnold be kept behind bars for the duration of his trial. However, a judge ruled they hadn’t met the burden to keep Arnold jailed without bond.

While the $1 million bail was granted, the Lions took a hard stance, announcing the player’s release shortly after he was bonded.

Arnold’s arrest stems from a February incident in Tampa involving allegations of robbery and kidnapping. The former Bama standout is accused of orchestrating the crimes, with alleged co-conspirators giving him up

Arnold’s lawyers said he was looking forward to his day in court. He would have hoped to still be an NFL player then. But his future remains uncertain, with life imprisonment a possibility right now.
