Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid had enough of a Josh Simmons during a recent team meeting. The quarterback and the coach reportedly clashed with the offensive tackle on Wednesday, a day before the team placed him on injured reserve.

Simmons, the No. 32 pick in the 2025 draft, has been dealing with a back injury. He was inactive for the Chiefs’ first five games. Simmons reportedly sat with his feet up in the offense’s meeting room. Reid, true to his locker room etiquette, asked Simmons to put his feet down, witnesses said.

The lineman refused, telling the coach he needed to sit that way because of his ongoing back issues. He added that his hips were aching.

NFL Network reported that Reid instructed the player to get treatment from athletic trainers if he continued to deal with pain. After that moment, tension rose. The exchange “disrupted the meeting,” and Mahomes had to intervene.

Mahomes agreed with Reid and told Simmons to leave the room and get treatment. The OT left the room but stayed in the building. Simmons apologized to the coach and the team later that day, admitting that he could have approached the situation differently.

Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs’ vice president of sports medicine and performance, told reporters on Thursday that Simmons missed Wednesday’s practice to talk with his family and representation about how to proceed with his rehab.

He has been inactive since August. Initially, he returned to practice ahead of Week 6 after an MRI showed his back issue had improved. Now, he will have to wait at least four more weeks before he can come back.
