Kayshon Boutte’s name has been mentioned in trade rumors for months. That speculation appears to have finally turned into action.

The Patriots and Texans have agreed to a trade, sending Boutte to Houston, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. New England will receive safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick in return, per the report shared through The Ringer and Netflix Sports.

The move addresses needs on both sides of the deal.

Houston Needed A Receiver After Losing Jayden Higgins

Houston’s motivation traces directly back to a devastating injury. Second-year wideout Jayden Higgins tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Raiders last week, ending his season before it started.

That loss gutted a Texans receiving room that already leaned heavily on Nico Collins as its top option. Houston moved quickly in the aftermath, signing veteran receivers Sterling Shepard and Robert Woods for immediate depth while continuing to explore the trade market.

Boutte gives Houston a younger, more explosive option than either of the veteran additions. He caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season, averaging 16.7 yards per catch as one of Drake Maye’s top downfield targets.

General manager Nick Caserio previously worked in New England’s front office, a connection that made this pairing a natural fit once talks advanced.

Kayshon Boutte Becomes The Odd Man Out In New England

New England’s decision to move Boutte came down to a crowded receiver room. The Patriots added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs this offseason, pushing Boutte down the depth chart despite his strong 2025 production.

Boutte had previously requested a trade out of New England, even as he told reporters this summer that he hoped to stay.

“I want to be in New England for the rest of my career, I would say,” he said in July. “I enjoy it out here. Been here three years. This is my new home.”

The Patriots had reportedly been seeking a substantial return for Boutte, with earlier reports suggesting they wanted a third-round pick before eventually settling for this package. Landing Reed gives New England an immediate depth piece at safety, a position the team has continued monitoring throughout camp.

Both teams open their seasons in less than three weeks. Houston now gets a chance to integrate Boutte into its offense before Week 1, while New England turns its attention to finalizing its receiver rotation behind Brown and Doubs.
