Mac Jones probably did not think a snowball fight would turn into a political controversy.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback joined a huge snowball fight at Washington Square Park earlier this week after a major blizzard hit Manhattan. Someone recorded a video of Jones throwing snowballs into the crowd. He later shared the video on TikTok and made a joke about his throwing arm.
“Snowball launchmaxxing,” Jones wrote. When a fan told him he was “throwing dots out there,” Jones fired back with a grin. “Absolute rippers.”
The fun quickly turned serious. Zohran Mamdani did not like what he saw from parts of the crowd. Some people started throwing snowballs at police officers who worked the streets during the storm. Mamdani addressed that behavior head-on.
“Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving. Treat them with respect,” Mamdani said. “If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.”
No one has accused Jones of targeting officers.
Arrests Follow Chaos In The Park

New York City police arrested 27-year-old social media creator Gusmane Coulibaly on Thursday. They charged him with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and harassment, a non-criminal violation. Police said he threw snowballs at officers along with other people.
The department also shared photos of three other people they want to question about the incident. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch strongly criticized what happened, calling it “disgraceful” and “criminal.”

Jones has not said much about the criticism, other than his earlier lighthearted posts. He seemed to see the snowball fight as a fun break from football.
The 27-year-old quarterback is coming off a solid 2025 season. He filled in for injured starter Brock Purdy and helped the 49ers go 5-3. His performance has led to talk that he could be traded during the offseason.
General manager John Lynch praised Jones this week. “Mac made this place better,” Lynch said. “He was outstanding this season. He picked us up in a huge way.”
Lynch also pointed to Jones’ personality. “He’s got an infectious attitude that affects everybody on our team,” he said.
For now, Jones remains in San Francisco. The snowball fight may fade from headlines. But in New York, it already left a mark.
