Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice made a significant legal move this week.
The 26-year-old is in the final year of his rookie contract, and his legal troubles resurfaced in May, when he was jailed for violating his probation.
WFAA is now reporting that Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Wednesday, citing federal court documents.
Rice claims to be more than $3.45 million in debt. More than $2.1 million of that total is tied to plaintiffs in civil suits that have settled or are awaiting trial.
He’s also declared $677,054 in personal assets. That includes $421,825 in deferred compensation.
The receiver listed a Mercedes-Benz and a Super Bowl LVIII ring valued at $160,000. The filing states he pledged the ring as collateral for his attorney’s legal fees.
How The 2024 Crash Settlement Fits Into The Filing

Rice owes $979,837 under a 2025 civil settlement tied to the March 2024 crash in Dallas.
A judge entered judgment requiring him to pay a crash victim $1 million, plus interest and attorney fees. NBC DFW adds that most of that money remains unpaid, though Rice’s Chiefs paychecks were reportedly being garnished.
Rice pleaded guilty in July 2025 to two felony charges tied to the crash. His plea included five years of probation and a 30-day jail term. The NFL suspended him six games, and he returned in Week 7 of the 2025 season.
Rice later served his 30-day sentence and left Dallas County Jail on June 16.
Rice’s bankruptcy attorney, David Shuster, and the Chiefs both declined to comment. A creditors’ meeting is set for December 11, according to the filing.
