Robert Kraft Leaks Big News On Roger Goodell Just Days Before NFL Season Opener

NFL owners settled into their seats for one more league update before kickoff week.
Roger Goodell’s contract wasn’t set to expire until March 2027. Nobody expected a decision this early. But the timing turned out to matter more than anyone realized.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft sent a memo to the full ownership group on Sunday, just days before the 2026 season opener.
As chairman of the NFL’s Compensation Committee, Kraft confirmed that Goodell has agreed to a four-year extension through the 2030 season.
Kraft’s Memo Answered A Question Nobody Had Asked Yet
Goodell will be 72 years old when the deal expires, closing out 24 years at the helm of the league. The new contract also lines up with the current collective bargaining agreement, which expires that same month.
“As members of the Compensation Committee, we’re pleased to announce that we have reached agreement with Roger to remain as Commissioner through the 2030 League Season, ending on March 31, 2031,” the memo read, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.
Kraft’s memo emphasized that the deal leans heavily on performance. More than 95 percent of Goodell’s total compensation ties directly to metrics tracked by the Compensation Committee.
“Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success,” the memo continued. “We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.”
Five other owners signed the memo alongside Kraft: John Mara of the Giants, Shad Khan of the Jaguars, Jimmy Haslam of the Browns, Michael Bidwill of the Cardinals, and Greg Penner of the Broncos.
This Extension Continues A Pattern Stretching Back Two Decades
Kraft himself has stayed in the headlines this year for reasons beyond league business. He missed out on Pro Football Hall of Fame induction earlier this year despite winning six Super Bowl titles with the Patriots.
Goodell publicly backed Kraft’s Hall of Fame case at the time, calling his contributions to the sport “spectacular.”
This marks Goodell’s fifth contract extension since replacing Paul Tagliabue in 2006. He previously signed new terms in 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2023, building a tenure that has made him one of the most scrutinized figures in the league’s ownership landscape.
Goodell has consistently deflected questions about his legacy while still on the job. “If I was focusing on my legacy, I wouldn’t be standing in front of you,” he told reporters back in 2023. “You guys can decide legacies later. That’s not what I’m focused on.”
