J.J. Watt reminded everyone this weekend why he remains one of the most respected figures in football, on and off the field.

The moment started with a social media post from a fan named Douglas Sandstorm, who ran into Watt at a restaurant in Greenwich Village on Saturday morning.

Despite idolizing the future Hall of Famer growing up, the fan admitted he was too nervous to even ask for a photo.

“Not proud of it, man enough to say it. I had breakfast this morning in Greenwich Village NYC and a man sat next to me on his own. Somebody I idolised growing up watching NFL. But out of respect (like a scared little girl) I didn’t even ask for a picture,” he wrote on X.

Less than an hour later, Watt reached back out and asked if the fan was still in the area and available to meet up. He cleared his schedule immediately.

A photo of the two together soon circulated online, with the fan writing, “What a legend bro! Thank you so much for your time man. I’ll tell my kids about this story one day.”

The gesture fits a pattern for Watt, who has built a reputation for these kinds of unscripted, personal moments throughout his career, including a hilarious exchange with a rookie teammate after his retirement announcement. Fans online were quick to praise the gesture.

“What a move by J.J. Watt,” one person wrote, while another called it “such an impactful” way for an athlete to connect with someone who looks up to them.

Watt spent 12 seasons in the NFL, finishing his career with 114.5 sacks, 27 forced fumbles and five Pro Bowl selections, mostly with the Houston Texans. He was named Defensive Player of the Year three times and won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2017, the same year he raised more than $37 million for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts through his foundation.

“I’ve been fortunate to be on this stage and to win Defensive Player of the Year awards, but everything that you do on the field pales in comparison to what you do off the field,” Watt said. “When I go to my grave I want to be remembered as a guy who helped people out and who tried to do as much as he could off the field to be the best man he could be.”

Watt has stayed just as outspoken since retiring in 2022, recently sharing a pointed message about the NFL’s international scheduling on social media. Whatever the topic, moments like this weekend’s fan encounter continue to reinforce why Watt’s popularity has never really faded, even years removed from his final NFL snap.
