Tony Romo’s Crazy Mug Shot Leaves NFL Fans Wondering The Same Thing

Tony Romo is all over the news now. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was reportedly arrested Thursday night in Milwaukee after a traffic stop.

According to FOX 6 Milwaukee, deputies with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office pulled Romo over while he was driving south on Interstate 43 across the high-rise bridge. Authorities cited him for operating a vehicle while under the influence.

WISN reported, “He was taken into custody for OWI book and release”. In Wisconsin, a first-offense OWI is usually treated as a civil offense rather than a criminal charge. It typically carries a fine of $150 to $300.

Later, TMZ obtained and shared Romo’s mug shot from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office. As usual, the photo spread across social media. While many people talked about the arrest, NFL fans seemed to focus on one detail in the mug shot that immediately caught their attention.

Fans Can’t Stop Talking About Romo’s Expression

Instead of looking worried or upset, Romo appeared to smile in his mug shot. That expression resulted many asking the same question about why he looked so cheerful.

One Commenter joked, “OOOOOHHHHGN HERE WE GO GIN.”

Another fan wrote on X, “Smiling in your mugshot is CRAZY.”

One user joked, “I bet he talked about Mahomes on the ride to the station.”

Another person simply asked, “This is one of the happiest DUI mugshots ever.”

Actually, fans reacted to the unusual expression rather than the arrest itself.

After retiring from the NFL, Romo joined CBS Sports in 2017 as a game analyst. Early in his broadcasting career, fans loved how he could predict plays before they happened. Although some of that excitement has faded in recent years, CBS is expected to keep him as one of its top NFL broadcasters for the 2026 season.

The case will now move through the legal process. Romo is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21, and more information could come out as the hearing gets closer.
