The Detroit Lions are reportedly considering a position change for Jahmyr Gibbs in a desperate attempt to save their season.

Last Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day loss to the Green Bay Packers dropped Detroit to 7-5 on the season. Star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown left that game with an ankle injury, and his status for tomorrow’s game against the Dallas Cowboys is up in the air.

The Lions are already without star tight end Sam LaPorta, who’s expected to miss the rest of 2025. The 24-year-old LaPorta, who was on pace for a career year, recently underwent back surgery.

With the injuries piling up, the Lions are reportedly considering the idea of moving Jahmyr Gibbs to wide receiver.

Speaking on 105.3 The FAN in Dallas, Lions insider Dave Birkett indicated that Gibbs could line up at wide receiver against the Cowboys tomorrow night.

“That’s a very distinct possibility. He had a game earlier this year where he had 10-11 catches…they’ve certainly used him that way…They have two good playmakers and everyone else is just a guy. And that’s Jahmyr and Jameson Williams. And they need to get the ball in those guys’ hands as much as possible.”

If the Lions win on Thursday, they’ll be 8-5 and one game behind the 9-4 San Francisco 49ers for the NFC’s last wild card spot. With the 9-3 Chicago Bears visiting the 8-3-1 Green Bay Packers, it also helps Detroit, as one of them is guaranteed to lose.

Lions Can’t Just Rely On Jahmyr Gibbs

Gibbs is having another lights-out season with 1,019 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games. As a pass-catcher, he already has 51 receptions (two away from setting a new career high) for 397 yards and three touchdowns.

However, the fact is that Detroit isn’t getting much out of its other core players. Jared Goff has been shaky at best this season. Coming off a career year, Jameson Williams might not even reach the 1,000-yard mark this time.

The offensive line and pass defense have been atrocious, too. If not for the efforts of Aidan Hutchinson, there’s no telling how much worse Detroit’s defense would be.
