Ryan Clark’s old take about Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson has resurfaced more than five years later. And let’s just say it aged like milk.
On Tuesday, news emerged that Kyler Murray would be released by the Arizona Cardinals after seven inconsistent seasons. Murray will head to free agency, which opens next Wednesday, for the first time in his career.
With the Murray era in Arizona over, some wise football fans decided to bring back one of Ryan Clark’s worst takes as an NFL analyst for ESPN. Yes, it’s his job to give controversial takes, but this take from Nov. 2020 is really something else.
On ESPN’s “Get Up” program, Clark opined that the Baltimore Ravens would have a better shot at winning a Super Bowl with Kyler Murray than Lamar Jackson. Clark claimed that Murray had “the extra dimension.”
Clark added, “With what I’ve seen from them…if I had to put one at quarterback and say ‘This guy takes X team to the championship,’ I’d always pick Kyler Murray first.”

Ryan Clark’s Hot Take Was Terrible At The Time, And Even Worse In Hindsight
Clark’s take made little sense, given that Lamar Jackson was the reigning MVP. Murray got off to a hot start in the first half of 2020, but he still wasn’t anything close to the peak version of Jackson in 2019.
Here we are in 2026. Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP with a 76-31-0 regular season record. He has 22,608 passing yards, 187 touchdowns, 6,522 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference.
Murray has never topped 26 passing touchdowns in a season. He led Arizona to the postseason once in seven years, whereas the Ravens have made it six times in eight seasons under Jackson. If not for injuries, he probably would have gotten them there in 2021 and 2025 as well.
