The Carolina Panthers took a significant hit before training camp even got going. A key member of the defense suffered a serious knee injury during the opening practice and will miss the entire 2026 season.
The news landed hard for a unit already looking to improve its pass rush.
Nic Scourton Suffers Season-Ending Injury in First Practice

The outside linebacker tore the ACL in his right knee during team drills at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday. He was carted off the field in visible distress as the seriousness of the injury quickly became clear. Subsequent tests and an MRI confirmed the worst-case scenario, Ian Rapoport reported.
“Panthers promising young LB Nic Scourton, who went down in practice with a knee injury that left him in tears, suffered a torn ACL, sources told me and @CameronWolfe. He’s done for the season,” Rapoport wrote on X.
“Nic Scourton will seek a second opinion and if the ACL is confirmed, he’ll have surgery in the coming weeks. The #Panthers are high on Scourton, who is just scratching the surface.”

The 21-year-old, a second-round pick out of Clemson, had recorded five sacks as a rookie. His absence removes one of the more promising young edge rushers from the roster for the full year. He is expected to seek a second opinion before undergoing surgery in the coming weeks.
Teammate Isaiah Simmons offered a personal gesture of support, giving him a bracelet with a message of faith. The organization now turns its attention to filling the gap on a defense that was already thin at the edge position.
Nic Scourton’s Absence Creates Immediate Depth Questions

Pat Jones and other available options will need to step up as the Panthers adjust their defensive plans. The timing of the injury, coming on the very first day of camp, leaves little room for gradual evaluation or competition at the position.
Earlier coverage captured the emotional scene as the player was carted off in tears after going down. The setback marks an early challenge for the coaching staff as they open the 2026 campaign.
The Panthers will continue training camp without one of their young defensive building blocks. The focus now shifts to recovery and finding ways to compensate for the lost production along the edge.
