Jamal Adams’ long-awaited Minnesota Vikings debut ended with a brutal injury scare on Saturday.

The veteran defender left the Vikings’ preseason opener against the New York Giants after suffering a right knee injury. Adams went down without contact during the second quarter and struggled to get back up before entering the medical tent.

The injury happened while Adams covered Giants receiver Calvin Austin III. Jaxson Dart had just connected with Malachi Fields for a 15-yard touchdown when Adams stumbled during coverage. He stayed on the turf before medical personnel examined him. 

Adams eventually left the field on a cart and headed to the locker room for further evaluation. The Vikings had not announced the exact injury immediately after the game.

Adams played 11 defensive snaps before leaving and recorded one tackle during his brief debut, according to ESPN.

Jamal Adams Had Already Made An Impact Before Injury

Adams had already flashed his trademark physicality before the injury. He made a tackle for loss during the first quarter, showing why Minnesota viewed him as a useful veteran addition.

The Vikings signed Adams on July 27 after he spent the 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. He played all 17 games last season after appearing in only 15 games across the previous three seasons.

That durability represented a major turnaround for a player whose career had been repeatedly disrupted by injuries. Adams previously suffered a severe quadriceps injury in 2022 and dealt with other setbacks afterward.

The former sixth overall pick also changed positions last season. He moved from safety to linebacker with Las Vegas, but Minnesota has used him in multiple roles during training camp.

That versatility appeared to give defensive coordinator Brian Flores another experienced piece to deploy. Now, Minnesota may have to adjust those plans before the regular season begins.

Vikings Now Face A Major Defensive Depth Problem

Head coach Kevin O’Connell offered little optimism after Adams left the game. He said the team felt crushed for the veteran and acknowledged how much Adams had brought during camp. Adam Schefter’s update on Adams’ injury

“You’re just crushed for him,” the coach said at halftime. “We’re going to miss him. And we’re going to need to see some guys here step up.”

O’Connell also said Adams had brought personality, experience and toughness in a short time. The coach added that Minnesota would need other players to step up.

The Vikings have not announced a definitive diagnosis or timetable. But O’Connell has indicated that the signs aren’t good.

Adams entered Minnesota after a season in which he finally appeared in every game. The Vikings hoped that availability would carry into his new chapter.

Instead, his first preseason appearance ended in another setback.
