Cleveland Browns second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders heard the trash talk loud and clear. Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was not even practicing Thursday. He still made sure the Browns signal-caller felt his presence.

Reporter Tom Withers caught Gardner-Johnson yelling “Check-down King” toward Sanders on the sideline. The jab came during the Browns-Bills joint practice in Berea.

Other Bills voices piled on. One defender called the Browns offense “checkdown city.” The comments targeted Sanders as he battled Deshaun Watson for the starting job.

Gardner-Johnson has a reputation for getting in opponents’ heads. He stayed on the sideline but kept the verbal pressure high. Sanders split first-team reps with Watson throughout the session.

The young quarterback stayed locked in. He took the early shots and kept working against a tough Bills defense. Coaches on both sides watched the competition closely.

Sanders later starts Saturday’s preseason game against Buffalo. The joint practice offered a clear preview of that matchup.

Shedeur Sanders Shows Strong Turnaround

Sanders answered the noise with production. He uncorked a 50-yard touchdown strike to Malachi Corley that lit up the practice field. The throw showed the deep-ball ability critics sometimes question.

Updated tracker numbers had Sanders completing 15 of 23 passes across team drills. He protected the ball and hit several intermediate and longer throws. On the other hand, Watson went 12 of 17 with a touchdown and an interception in his share of snaps.

The big play to Corley stood out. It proved Sanders can push the ball downfield when the opportunity opens.

The positive of this situation is that Gardner-Johnson’s trash-talking didn’t lead to a fight, as it happened between the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints earlier this week.

Sanders continues fighting for the Browns’ starting role. The trash talk will only fuel him heading into Saturday.
