Kenneth Walker III arrived in Kansas City this offseason as the Chiefs’ answer to years of running back frustration. His first training camp with the team hasn’t gone as smoothly as the organization would have hoped.

The Chiefs confirmed Tuesday that Walker is dealing with a foot issue and won’t practice. Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick first reported the news, noting the team gave no immediate timeline for his return. Walker had practiced Monday, just one day after Kansas City’s 16-15 preseason loss to Tampa Bay.

That timing alone wouldn’t normally raise alarm bells. Walker’s history with this exact type of injury is what has fans nervous.

The Injury Fits A Troubling Annual Pattern

Physical therapist and injury tracker Jeff Mueller laid the pattern out on the back of the news.

Walker has dealt with multiple ankle and foot issues dating back to 2022, averaging roughly two weeks missed with each occurrence.

The timing lines up almost perfectly with last year’s situation, too. On Aug. 22, 2025, Seattle reported that Walker was unlikely to practice daily due to foot soreness, an issue that persisted throughout his entire 2025 season with the Seahawks.

Now, almost exactly one year later, the same foot problem has resurfaced with a new team.

Walker signed a three-year, $43.05 million deal with Kansas City in March, fresh off winning Super Bowl LX MVP with Seattle. He rushed for 135 yards in that championship win and finished the 2025 season with 1,027 rushing yards.

The Chiefs haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Kareem Hunt in 2017, making Walker one of the more important additions to Kansas City’s roster this offseason.

Kansas City Has Reason To Play It Safe

The good news, if there is any, comes down to timing. Kansas City closes out its preseason Friday against Walker’s former team, the Seahawks, a game the Chiefs have little incentive to risk him for. The severity of the injury hasn’t been disclosed, and it’s entirely possible the team simply chooses to rest him through the finale and let him heal before Week 1.

Kansas City does have some depth behind Walker, including Emari Demercado, Emmett Johnson, and Brashard Smith, giving the coaching staff options if his recovery takes longer than expected. Walker has been counted on as part of a Chiefs bounce-back effort this season, following a disappointing 2025 campaign that saw Kansas City miss the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

The Chiefs open their regular season against the Denver Broncos on ‘Monday Night Football’, a game which is just 22 days away. Fans will be watching closely to see whether Walker’s foot cooperates before then.
