The gap between Rudolph and the two rookies remains sizable after preseason action. Howard went 10 of 15 for 74 yards and two interceptions against the New York Jets in the most recent preseason game.

Keeping all four gives McCarthy extra time to evaluate future options. It also protects against any early injury to Rodgers. The extra roster spot costs depth elsewhere but prioritizes the most important position.

Allar showed strong arm talent in limited snaps. Howard still needs more development. Rudolph’s experience keeps him locked in as the primary insurance policy.
