The Philadelphia Eagles’ entire 2026 season might be in jeopardy due to the blood clot that Jalen Hurts has.

For an NFL quarterback, a sore calf might seem like an unsurprising consequence of getting hit by a defender. In Hurts’ case, an ultrasound revealed something else: a superficial blood clot.

He was struck in the calf during an Oct. 4 game and sought treatment days after. An ultrasound in London revealed the clot, but doctors cleared him to play in the team’s game against the Jaguars in London.

However, a follow-up ultrasound revealed “movement in the small blood clot.” The Eagles announced Thursday that Hurts would miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers while the team determines his treatment.

Dr. Brian Sutterer took to X this week and reacted to the news about Jalen Hurts. He analyzed a report stating that Hurts would miss Sunday’s game due to a superficial blood clot.

Dr. Brian Sutterer expressed concern that the condition could worsen over time. “Oo boy – if this has progressed to a deep vein clot instead of lower risk superficial, he could be looking at the end of his season,” Sutterer warned.

Specifically, a deeper clot requires a much more intensive and prolonged recovery protocol. The doctor further added that treatment for that specific issue involves taking prescribed blood thinners for multiple months.

“The standard is no contact sports while on blood thinners,” the doctor noted.

Just last year, Chris Olave suffered a pulmonary embolism, which caused him to miss the New Orleans Saints’ regular-season finale. Doctors discovered the blood clot in his lung after he initially reported feeling ill prior to Week 18.

Because players cannot safely play contact sports while on blood thinners, he was held out of team drills. He remained on a roughly six-month course of blood thinners.

Should Jalen Hurts have to do the same, his 2026 season is over.
