Shedeur Sanders might finally be getting his chance to show what he’s got.

Sanders has played 2 games in the 2026 NFL season for the Cleveland Browns as a backup. Deshaun Watson ended up winning the starting QB role coming out of training camp, even though fans weren’t happy about it. It was basically his job to lose.

Consequently, it wasn’t his play that is taking him out of this role.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol after reporting symptoms Tuesday morning. Watson took a helmet-to-helmet hit during Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He underwent a concussion evaluation by an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and was cleared to return.

However, the team’s medical staff evaluated Watson again after the game and Monday morning. Again, Watson showed no symptoms, passed both evaluations, and was cleared. Unfortunately, Watson reported Tuesday morning that he began experiencing concussion symptoms Monday night. The team immediately placed him in the concussion protocol.

Because of his condition, Shedeur Sanders is in line to make his first start of the season this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green are also on the Browns’ roster. For the 5-3 Browns, it’s a significant development. They need to keep pace with the 6-2 Steelers and 5-2 Bengals.

Getting another loss right now would be detrimental to the team’s chances of making the playoffs. Shedeur Sanders started the final seven games of his rookie season in 2025.
