The Chargers wrapped up their preseason on Thursday night with a game against the Rams. But one awkward moment from the broadcast is drawing more attention than the final score.

The Chargers fell 20-18, closing out the exhibition slate before Sunday’s roster cutdown deadline. Amar Johnson, fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster, picked up 37 yards on seven carries during the loss.

One of those runs prompted color analyst Dan Fouts to make an unusual comment on air.

Fouts’ Word Choice Caught Fans Off Guard

Fouts was describing how Johnson used his arm to keep his balance mid-run.

“Look at how he uses that third leg,” Fouts said, referring to Johnson bracing himself with his hand during the play.

Fouts almost certainly meant the comment literally, but the wording landed as unintentional innuendo once it started circulating.

Fans reacted with a mix of amusement and secondhand embarrassment.

“I understand what he means, but damn, Dan,” one fan wrote.

Another joked that the moment might have played out differently with a different analyst. “Would have been 1000x funnier if it was Greg Olsen who said this,” they wrote.

A third fan pointed out the timing couldn’t have been more fitting, given the player’s last name. “Fittingly, the RB’s last name is ‘Johnson,’” they wrote.

Johnson Continues Fighting For A Roster Spot

Johnson signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State in 2025, following a decorated college career that included two FCS national championships.

He’s spent this preseason building a case for a spot behind Los Angeles’ top running backs, putting together a strong performance against Houston earlier in camp that included two touchdowns.

Fouts, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who spent his entire 15-year playing career with the Chargers franchise and is recognized as one of their best-ever quarterbacks, has worked in the broadcast booth for decades since retiring, known for blunt, old-school commentary that occasionally lands differently than intended.

The Chargers now turn their attention to Sunday’s roster cuts before opening the regular season Sept. 13 at home against the Cardinals, with Johnson’s spot on the final roster still very much undecided.
