The game between the Detroit Lions and the New Orleans Saints went down to the wire. While the Lions came out on top, it was clear that the team needs some help on defense.
Widely viewed as a good defensive team, the Lions’ defense late in their game against the Saints was a cause for concern. During the fourth period and overtime, New Orleans registered 256 yards on offense.
It’s not another QB that they need. But if they could upgrade, it’s for a cornerback.
Detroit Lions Could Trade For Joey Porter Jr.
Safety and/or cornerback are the immediate concerns for the Detroit Lions right now. The team’s secondary was their biggest question mark heading into the 2026 season.
However, the path to improving their defense might be tricky. But there’s a route they could take, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
“The Lions were looking for corner help even before they released Terrion Arnold in June. Detroit can spend the early weeks of the season evaluating how D.J. Reed, Keith Abney II, Roger McCreary and others play together,” wrote Fowler.
“Detroit has ample salary cap space — around $38 million as of Sunday, according to OverTheCap.com — but has committed more than $1 billion in extensions for star players, which could lead to a cap crunch very soon.”
“Detroit likes man-coverage corners, and Porter definitely qualifies,” Fowler continued.
Lions Currently Thin At CB After Terrion Arnold’s Release
After the Lions suddenly released Terrion Arnold in the offseason due to his troubles off the field, the team’s cornerback depth is quite thin.
The team has D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin as the starting outside cornerbacks. Roger McCreary is handling the nickel role. Keith Abney II, one of their backup CBs, also played a few defensive snaps against the Saints.
Should the Lions trade for Joey Porter Jr., they could potentially have a future Pro Bowler at their disposal. In 2025, the Steelers standout recorded 52 combined tackles (35 solo) and 14 pass deflections in 14 games. Moreover, he had one interception.
At just 26, the sky is the limit for Porter.
