Josh Jacobs was once regarded as one of the best running backs in football. But an ugly offseason incident turned his life upside down. Now, his future with the Green Bay Packers has become uncertain.

The NFL has already placed the troubled Packers star on the commissioner’s exempt list. Jacobs, who is out indefinitely, cannot attend games or practices. He’s still allowed inside Green Bay’s facilities, but that’s about it.

But after his off-court incident, it seems like the Packers are pivoting in another direction.

MarShawn Lloyd Expected To Keep RB Spot Even If Josh Jacobs Returns

Jacobs did not play in the preseason due to his off-court problems and a groin injury. With the Packers receiving too much heat regarding Jacobs’ situation, sitting him out was the best course of action.

In another twist, ESPN’s Dan Graziano predicted that even if Josh Jacobs gets cleared to play, MarShawn Lloyd is expected to continue starting at WR for the Packers.

“It seems Lloyd will get the first crack at the starting job, and the coaching staff likes what it has seen from him throughout the offseason and training camp. Even if Jacobs is cleared to come back, he has no more guaranteed money left on his contract after this season, and the Packers could be transitioning at running back anyway. If Lloyd shows he can handle the job and stay healthy, he could keep the RB1 role,” Graziano explained.

Packers Need Lloyd To Be Injury-Free

The biggest hurdle for MarShawn Lloyd right now is his injury-ridden past. In his two seasons, the 25-year-old has only played one game for the Packers. 

Surprisingly, Lloyd has remained healthy throughout the offseason. He was an active participant during training camp. In addition, he played well in the 2026 preseason. He has the speed to potentially make an impact, plus good receiving skills.

Kaleb Johnson could also get a shot, but this is Lloyd’s position to lose. He should get the first crack as the Packers’ lead running back this season.
